[INTERVIEW | ENTREVISTA] PATiENTS 페이션츠

PATiENTS (페이션츠) es un grupo de punk rock coreano, que han decidido llamarse a sí mismos un grupo de “punk híbrido” ya que decidieron incorporar elementos de rock, new wave y pop a lo que ya tenían afianzado desde 2005, año en el que debutaron. Sumin Jo se pone al frente del trío como vocalista, y le acompañan Sowoon Choi, batería, y Hyuckjang Kwon, a los teclados. Hemos podido hablar con ellos debido a su visita a Barcelona con motivo del Primavera Pro 2017. ¿Quieres saber qué nos han contado? ¡Sigue con BA NA NA! 

- ¿De dónde surge el nombre PATiENS?

- Where did the name PATiENTS come from?

Sumin: Surge de la sociedad enferma y el tiempo enfermo de mi país (Corea). Estamos enfermos. Así que necesitamos diversión. En Corea, la palabra 'patiens' es homónima. Puede significar gente enferma o gente feliz. Creo que ese término es una buena representación de la sociedad coreana, porque a pesar del dolor, se puede encontrar la felicidad. 

Sumin: It came from sick society and sick age in my nation. We are sick. So we need more fun. In Korean, the word ‘patients’ is a homonym. The word can mean ‘sick people’ and also ‘happy people.’ I think this word is a good representation of Korean society because even when it hurts, there’s still happiness to be found.

- ¿Qué es el “punk híbrido”? ¿Por qué os definís así?

- What is "hybrid punk"? Why do you define yourself like this?

Sumin: "Punk híbrido" es un termino que creamos para describir a PATiENTS. Nos decidimos por esa descripción por dos razones. La primera fue para distinguirnos de otros artistas punk porque la musica que nosotros tocamos no es estrictamente punk. Estamos en contra de esa idea cerrada de seguir la típica imagen del punk. Creo que la esencia del punk rock es destruir algo y de ahí crear algo totalmente nuevo y excitante. Tristemente, mucha gente piensa en el estilo que han utilizado para ser reconocidos como "punks". Por eso quisimos mostrar una nueva forma de describir nuestra marca característica del punk, y por eso lo llamamos "punk híbrido". La segunda razón fue para ofrecernos a nosotros mismos la libertad musical de hacer lo que quisiéramos. Al crear nosotros mismos el término, podemos experimentar con muchos estilos y aún así ser fieles a nuestras raíces DIY (Do It Yourself), que creemos que es la base del punk rock. Nos encanta poder hacer las cosas nosotros mismos y ser una banda de "punk híbrido" nos permite mezclar diferente tipo de música en base a la mentalidad del punk rock. El "punk híbrido" es nuestra versión ideal de lo que tendría que ser el punk rock. 

Sumin: “Hybrid punk” is a term we created to describe PATiENTS. We came up with this phrase for two reasons. The first reason was to distinguish ourselves from other punk acts because the music we play isn’t straight-up punk. We’re against the idea of people blindly following the standard punk image. I believe the essence of punk rock is to destroy something and then create something new and exciting from it. Sadly, a lot of people only think of the style in the image they have been taught to recognize as “punk.” So we wanted to come up with a new way to describe our own unique brand of punk and decided to name it “hybrid punk.”The second reason why we came up with the name was to give ourselves more musical freedom to do whatever we want. Since we created the term ourselves, we can experiment with a wider spectrum of styles and at the same time still stay true to our DIY roots, which to us is the cornerstone of punk rock. We love being able to do our own thing, and being a “hybrid punk” band allows us to mix different kinds of music based around a punk rock mindset. “Hybrid punk” is our ideal version of what punk rock should be like. 

- Soowon Choi, fuiste la última incorporación a la banda, ¿cómo fue esa entrada? ¿Qué crees que aportas al grupo?

- Soowon Choi, you were the last addition to the band, how was that entrance? What do you think you bring to the group?

Soowon: Llevaba tiempo queriendo unirme a PATiENTS, y finalmente lo hice. Estoy muy a gusto con los miembros. Después de unirme, el grupo tuvo partes con mayor fuerza y con un ritmo más sentido.

Soowon: I had hoped to join PATiENTS for long time, finally I joined PATiENTS. I am having great time with members. After I joined the group, PATiENTS got more powerful and sensitive rhythm parts.

- Sois el grupo más longevo de los que llegan a Barcelona gracias al Zandari Festa. Comenzasteis en 2005… Han pasado 12 años, y habéis evolucionado, ¿cómo ha sido vuestra evolución?

- You are the longest group of those who come to Barcelona thanks to Zandari Festa. You started in 2005... It's been 12 years, and you've evolved, how has your evolution been?

Sumin: La evolución ha sido natural, porque tocar al mismo nivel durante mucho tiempo puede ser aburrido. Siempre queremos pasarlo bien. 

Sumin: The evolution came naturally, because playing in same level long time can be bored. We always want we have fun.

- ¿Qué se siente al realizar esta gira europea y visitar Barcelona? ¿Qué expectativas tenéis tras este tour?

- What does it feel like to do this European tour and visit Barcelona? What are your expectations after this tour?

Sumin: Sienta bien, creo que siempre es bueno tener giras internacionales. Me gustan mucho. Para PATiENTS es el cuarto tour británico y el primero en España. Es muy emocionante. Y siempre tenemos la esperanza de tocar a nivel internacional. Este año vamos a estar entre Londres y Seúl y esperamos que después de este tpur tengamos más actividad internacional.

Sumin: It feels good, it’s always good to have international tour for me. I like it much. This is the 4th UK tour and the 1st Spain tour of PATiENTS. So exciting. And we always have hope for playing internationally. from this year, we will be based on London and Seoul. After this tour, we hope we will have international activity. 

- Venís de actuar durante varios días en Reino Unido, y después de pisar España, volvéis allí. Me imagino que no es vuestro primer tour fuera de Corea, ¿cuál ha sido vuestra experiencia favorita? ¿Alguna anécdota?

- You come to act for several days in the United Kingdom, and after treading Spain, you return there. I imagine it is not your first tour outside of Korea, what has been your favorite experience? Any anecdotes?

Sumin: PATiENTS 2017 UK & SPAIN TOUR supone el cuarto tour en el Reino Unido y el primero en España. Además, hemos hecho giras en Taiwán y en Japón. Tengo recuerdos felices de cada lugar. Cuando tocamos en Taipei, el escenario estaba al aire libre y el día del concierto era una tarde calurosa de verano. Estábamos enfermos por el cambio de tiempo de Taiwán. El concierto fue divertido y la gente estuvo genial, pero pensábamos que nos moríamos. Salvo eso, no hemos tenido muchos problemas, las giras fuera de Corea siempre son muy divertidas. 

Sumin: PATiENTS 2017 UK & SPAIN TOUR is our 4th UK tour and 1st Spain tour. And we had tours in Taiwan and Japan. I have all different happy memory on each venues. When we played in Taipei, the stage was outside and our playtime was in hot summer afternoon. We were in a state of prostration brought on by the heat in Taiwan. Show was fun and people were good but we felt near death. Except that, we did not have much problems, oversea tours are always fun, fun, fun.

- ¿Qué es lo que más os gusta de actuar fuera de Corea? ¿Cuál es la mayor diferencia entre actuar en vuestro país y fuera de él?

- What do you like most about acting outside of Korea? What is the biggest difference between acting in your country and outside it?

Sumin: Hemos hecho giras en el Reino Unido, en Taiwan, en Japón y en Corea. Los amantes de la música de otros países nos crean diferentes sentimientos. Lo primero de todo, me encanta el momento en el que estoy tocando y la audiencia y el grupo siente y disfuta juntos de la música, sin importarle la lengua o la cultura. Ese es uno de los mayores placeres de este tour. Hemos estado tocando durante más de 10 años en Seúl (Corea); hay una escena musical indie en mi ciodad, se llama Hongdae, y he estado ahí desde el principio. Ahí, hemos hecho conciertos en vivo y hemos consolidado la etiqueta indie con los amigos y miembros de PATiENTS. Somos una parte más de esa escena. Para bien o para mal, cuando tocamos en Seúl nos sentimos cómodos; cuando tocamos en Corea notamos que hay caras conocidas siempre. No está mal. Peor cuando hacemos un tour fuera de nuestro país, nos sentimos libres, mucho más que cuando tocamos en Corea. Podemos concentrarnos en nuestro directo como un artista. Casi nadie nos conoce antes del concierto, y es muy divertido tocar. 

Sumin: We had tours in the UK, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. The music lovers from other contries gave us all different feelings. First of all, when I play I love the moment that the audience and we feel and enjoy feelings together in music beyond language and culture. It is one of the most big pleasures in tour. We had played for more than 10 years in Seoul, Korea. There is an indie music scene in my town - it called Hongdae scene. I was there from the start. And I operate live music venue and indie lable with PATiENTS members and friends there. We are completley one of the scene. So good or bad, when we play in Seoul we can feel friendly and comfortable there. When we play at the venue in Korea, we can notice that there are many familliar faces in venue always. It is not bad. But when we play at overseas tour we can feel free, much more free than when we play in Korea. We can concentrate on our live completely as one artist. And almost nobody knows us before show, it is super fun to play. 

- Acabáis de publicar Space Call Girl, un trabajo producido íntegramente por vosotros, ¿nuevo trabajo a la vista?

- You just published Space Call Girl, a work produced entirely by you, new job in sight?

Sumin: Siempre hemos producido nuestra música. Nos encanta la manera de hacer las cosas DIY (Do It Yourself) y lo llevamos a cabo con amigos, artistas y compañeros. Simplemente queremos convertirnos en buenos músicos profesionales y en buenos amigos. 

Kwon: Me interesa la música cinematográfica y el arte del sonido. Pero ahora quiero centrarme solo en mi banda.

Sumin: We always have produced our music by ourselves. We love 'DIY' way with talented friends, artists and partners. We just want to become nice and professional musician and nice friends. 

Kwon: I am interesting film music and sound art. But now i want to concentrate only my band. 

- ¿Qué buscáis transmitir con vuestras canciones?

- What do you want to transmit with your songs?

Sumin: Energía y estado de ánimo. 

Sumin: Energy and mood.

- ¿Con qué canción disfrutan más vuestros fans?

- What song do your fans most enjoy?

Sumin: “Sipalsegi”, “Space Call Girl” y“Idiot VS Psycho”

- ¿Algún proyecto para lo que queda de 2017?

- Any project for the remainder of 2017?

Sumin: Vamos a hacer nuevas canciones y tenemos más conciertos. Vamos a lanzar un nuevo videoclip para “Game Boy Game Girl”. La canción ya ha salido, y podéis escucharla. Esperamos que la disfrutéis.

- ¿De dónde os viene la inspiración?

- Where does the inspiration come from?

Kwon: Películas, juegos y de la gente.

Sumin: De mi vida, cualquier cosa que me rodee. Y de los momentos en los que voy en coche, bici... 

Kwon: Films, games and people

Sumin: from my life, anything else around me. And from the moments when I move by car, bike and etc.

- ¿Cuáles han sido y son vuestros referentes en el mundo de la música?

- What have been and are your references in the world of music?

Sumin: Punk clásico, el pop coreano de los años 60 a los 90 (no el actual) y más. 

Sumin: Classic punk, Korean pop(from 60’s to 90’s, not now) and more.

- ¿Sabéis algo de español?

- Do you know any Spanish?
